1. अभ्यङ्गं- Ayurvedic Herbal therapeutic massage
Abhyanga is an important therapeutic measure and is a most commonly used ayurveda therapy for both healthy as well as people with diseases.
It involves therapeutic considerations, such as Dosha vayah, Prakriti etc. The therapeutic efficacy of abhyanga depends upon the appropriate selection of oil according to the disease, prakriti, the skill of the therapists, the co-operation of the patient, and any restriction that needs to be followed by the patient during and after treatment.

Just like the axle of the chariot and the leather bottle become durable by oiling them, so also the body.
A person should resort to abhyanga everyday if he wants to keep himself healthy. In classics, Abhyanga has been mentioned as a part of Dincharya. It is very useful before performing physical exercise and various shodana procedures.
2. शिरो अभ्यङ्गं -Head massage with medicated herbal oil
If a person applies oil on the head regularly, he does not suffer from headache, baldness, greying of hair, nor do his hair fall. Strength of his head and forehead is specially enhanced, his hair becomes black, long and deep rooted, his sense organs work properly, the skin of his face becomes brightened. Oil application on the head helps to have sound sleep and happiness.
3. कर्ण अभ्यङ्ग -Ear massage with herbal oil
Both the pinna of the ear is rubbed gently with fingers then rubbing and pulling gently is continued throughout the ear. Mild oil application is also done inside the ear canal.
Each form of stroke and each step are continued for about 5 minutes and in this way the whole process of head massage takes about 40-45 minutes. (if siro abhayanga alone is done)
4. सर्वान्गाभ्यङ्ग-Full body therapeutic oil massage
Benefits of Taila abhyangam
Sarvaanga abyanga is done after siroabyanga.The body should be massaged in sections and not the whole body at a stretch. This is to facilitate the proper flow of blood and lymph and induce relaxation of the body part by part, from the head to downwards.
The extremities can be massaged with long strokes in the direction of the body hair. The back of the neck, waist, and sides of the body can also be massaged using long and firm strokes.
Circular clockwise motion should be used on the joints.
The abdomen should be massaged in a clockwise circular motion in the direction of the large intestine. Move up on the right side then straight across the abdomen and then downwards towards the left side.
Abyanga should be done in sitting, supine, right and left lateral positions and prone position. At the end of the procedure the oil on the body is wiped off with tissue paper or towel.
5. पादभ्यङ्ग- Ayurvedic Foot massage
Padaabhyanga provides quick relief to the roughness, stiffness, dryness, fatigue and numbness of the legs. It makes the legs soft, strong and stable. It promotes eyesight. It controls vata and is good for gridhrasi (SCIATICA). It prevents cracks over the legs and sankocha of sira and snayu (TENDONS&LIGAMENT).
6. कायसेक / सर्वाङ्ग धरा / पिलिचिल्-Medicated oil bath (PIZHICHIL)
The word Pizhichil in Malayalam means squeezing. So, in this procedure either cotton or soft linen cloth is dipped in lukewarm medicated oil or ghee and squeezed so as to pour that oil in a continuous stream over the patient’s body. (pouring oil in a single stream from a proper height over the body is highly beneficial and considered the best).
It is the best treatment method in chronic vata-borne diseases such as hemiplegia, paralysis, apatantraka, and oestio arthritis. It is also good for diabetic neuropathy and burning feets. It is best for post pregnancy care and if it is practiced from 9th month of pregnancy the post pregnancy complications will be nullified.
Pizhichil/kaaya seka is also good for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) after exposure to a viral or bacterial infection, Increases Bodies Immunity, Anti-aging & rejuvenating, Alleviates burning sensation in the body, Ensures better circulation, Helps recovery from paralysis, Promotes healing of bone fractures.

Important of shiras (Head)
If the human body is a tree then the head is considered as the roots of this tree. The central portion of the body is thorax and abdomen is said to be the trunk of this tree. The upper and lower limbs are considered as the branches of this tree.
Use of Murdhini Tailas like Shiro-basti, Shiro-abhyanga etc is highly beneficial for the Shiras and it cures or controls the afro said diseases.
Moordha Taila is preventive and curative in nature. Since the brain controls the entire body functions, soothing the brain with Moordha taila procedures makes the body fit and healthy.

Shirodhara involves the use of such liquids that help to counter the negative effects of the out-of-balance doshas or conditions. The liquid soothes and pacifies the doshas when applied to the forehead, scalp and nervous system.
Shirodhara not only helps to reduce stress and soothe the nervous system but also has other beneficial effects like bringing relief from migraines, lowers high blood pressure, decreases hair loss, reduces stress and even helps to increase mental focus and concentration.

7. शिरो पिचु- siro pichu
Retention of oil-doused cotton fabric or linen cloth on the head is called as shiro pichu. (Retention of oil dipped cotton/linen cloth over Head).
(Pichu can be used in other parts of the body (like back, knee, neck which helps to heal the inflammation and relieves the pain. It is also good for arthritis, ligamental tear, tendinitis etc.)

Site of administration
Traditionally, siro pichu is applied on the Bregma. or maybe throughout the scalp of the upper head.

8. शिरो वस्ति-shiro vasti
Sirobasti or shirovasti is a Sanskrit word comprising of 2 words, shiro meaning head and vasti meaning retention. Thus, sirovasti means retaining the herbal medicated oil or ghee on the head with the help of a special chamber constructed with masha kalka (special dough) and leather.
Shirovasti may be preceded and followed by shiro abhyanga for achieving better results. Practice of shirobasti alone is also good.
As this procedure can be done without any form of massage, it is most ideal for dermatological conditions of the scalp like scalp psoriasis, dandruff, indra lupta etc It is also effective in bell’s palsy, facial paralysis, Parkinson disease, alzhimers, numbness of the head, insomnia, various headaches and in different psychological issues.
9. गण्डूषं&कवलं- oil pulling and oil retention in the oral cavity
The word gandusha is formed by Gadi + Gandescha, which means Mukhapuranam i.e filling the mouth with kalka or any liquid.
Filling the mouth with oil/ liquid/kalka and holding them without moving inside the oral cavity is called as Gandoosha. If oil is moved inside the oral cavity it is called kavala-oil pulling
The oil must be filled to the full capacity of the oral cavity and there should not be any movement of oil inside the mouth. It improves the oral health thereby preventing mukha (face), dhanta (teeth’s) and oshta(mouth) rogas. Kavala enhances the colour and complexion and the proper functioning of the face.
It is a special cleansing technique of the eye by pouring liquid herbal preparation in a continuous stream over the eyes for 10-20 minutes while resting the head in a comfortable position.
This technique soothes and relaxes the eyes, cooling and refreshing them, Delays cataract formation, helps in treating chronic Conjunctivitis, Improves eye sight.
10. Netra Tarpana-अक्षि तर्पण
Akshi tarpana is one among the 7 kriyakalpas. It is a Special treatment in which both the eyes are bathed in pure medicated ghee (clarified butter). This treatment’s recommended duration is between 8- 15 minutes. This treatment is done for minimum of 7 days and a maximum of 21 days.
Vagbhatta has further added a list of diseases specifically selected for tarpan karma. They are Kricchronmilana (difficulty in opening eyes), Siraharsha (congestion of conjunctival blood vessel), Sirotpata Arjuna (episcleritis), Tama(blackout), (sub conjunctiva hemorrhage), Syanda (conjunctivitis), Adhimantha (glaucoma), Anayatovata (referred pain in the eye or spenoidal sinusitis), Vataparyaya and Avranashukra (corneal opacity).
Relieves eye strain due to constant use of electronic devices, Corrects refractive errors of the eyes, Helps with chronic conjunctivitis, Corneal Ulcer, Dry eye syndrome, Eye diseases due to aggravation of Vata and Pitta toxins, Glaucoma, Helps in preventing early formation of cataract, Improper co-ordination and loss of movement of the eye ball, Pain and burning sensation in the eyes.
11. कर्ण पूरणं- Ear filling
Instilling medicated lukewarm medicine into the external auditory canal is known as karna poorana. It is effective not only in karna Rogas but also in other diseases.
The treatment begins with a partial head massage. The ear is then gently filled with 3 -10 drops of warm herbarized oil.
Bashpa Sweda-steam bath
To balance the doshas and ailments of a person, Sweda or medicated herbal steam bath helps to open the pores and flush/cleanse the system through the skin. It is usually very effective when taken after Abhyanga.
Reduces body pain, eliminates toxins, reduces stiffness, Beautifies the skin, removes cellulite, Helps with weight loss.
12. Kati vasti
1. Nirukti- kati
Kaṭi (कटि) refers to “waist”, “hip” or “buttocks”.
वसु निवसने- To reside, to hold, Staying, Retaining
Kati Vasti is a well-known therapy in Ayurveda that occupies a special place in bahya Sneha because of its simple yet powerful therapy for lumbo spinal issues. The outcome of the external therapeutics depends on pressure, temperature, technique and medicine. Here in Kati Vasti, the most important reason is the choice of medicated oil and temperature.
13. ग्रीव वस्ति- Greeva vasti
ग्रीवा - The back part of the neck, nape, neck.
Grīva vasti comes under Snigdha Swedana, in which luke warm medicated oil is retained in the neck region with the help of a circular frame made out of maasha pishti and applying continuous heat to that area for specific period of time.
Cervical spondylosis, Cervical disc lesion, Vertigo, Tingling, numbness of hands, Compression fractures, Chronic pain in neck region, Frozen shoulder, Whiplash injury, Pain & sprain of the neck Headaches due to cervical compression, Ankylosing spondylitis, Disk herniation Osteoporosis of neck injury.
14. Janu vasti
Jānu (जानु) is the name of a specific marma (vital points) of the human body.
BENEFITS OF JANU VASTI
Medicated Oil is poured into the compartment (space within the constructed ring of wheat flour on the knee). Before pouring oil, a small round shaped cotton is placed on the knee in order to prevent any burn on the skin due to the heat of the oil. Once the oil is filled up to the brim of the dough tub around the knee, the placed cotton is removed. Every few minutes, some oil is removed and replaced with hot oil to maintain the ideal temperature at about 39-42 deg.C.(The heat threshold varies from patient to patient).
THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS FOR JANU VASTI
HRUD BASTI – NURTURING HEART TREATMENT
A dough ring is formed into the shape of a tub in the heart area. This tub is filled with warm oil, which allows the soothing oils to penetrate the deepest structures and develop their miraculous effectiveness.
Hrud Basti is a rejuvenating and deeply relaxing treatment. Hrud Basti works primarily on emotional imbalance; it gently releases long accumulated negative emotions.
15. Nabhi vasti
A binding or connecting scattered media available in the structural parts of the body is known as Nabhi. Nabhi is located between Amashaya and Pakvashaya.
The main procedure is performed by filling warm medicated oil or ghee in the dough tub, either by gently pouring or squeezing in with a cotton gauze. Constant and uniform temperature is maintained by replacing the cold oil with warm one which was already warmed by keeping it in hot water.
16. Navarakizhi-Medicated Rice bath
An effective anti- aging / rejuvenation massage using a special type of rice that is cooked and soaked in herbal warm milk, then skillfully massaged simultaneously by two therapists all over the body.
Helps to prevent paralytic stroke, promotes anti-aging & rejuvenation, strengthens body tissues, Reduces body ache, Reduces debility monoplegia, Osteo-arthritis & Rheumatoid arthritis and various neurological diseases.
Special ayurvedic herbal paste applied on the head for 30-45 minutes.
Relieves headache, Depression, Hyper active conditions, burning sensation in the eyes, Insomnia, Skin disorders.
18. Patra Pinda Sweda
A highly rejuvenating treatment using fresh plants/herbs which are prepared by frying the leaves of the plants with several other herbal ingredients, tied together, dipped in warm medicated oil to release its beneficial effects and using this medicated oil simultaneously massaged by therapists all over the body for 45 minutes, usually after Abhyanga.
Relieves Chronic back pain, Loss of function of a part or whole limb, Joint stiffness and swellings, Muscular pain, Helps in Anti-aging & rejuvenating, Reduces pain due to Sciatica, Spondylitis, Sprains and cramps.
19. Nadee swedam / Ksheera dhooma
Luke warm liquid is prepared by boiling the leaves of drumstick, Varanaka, Eranda, Karanja, Surasa, Arjaka, Shireesa, Vasa, Vamsha, Arka, Malati , mixed with fats – oil, ghee etc. appropriate to the Dosha, Sura, Sukta, water and milk.
This medicated liquid is filled in a pressure cooker fitted with long tube and the steam coming out of it is directed on the affected part. Its called ekaanga sweda also. It is highly beneficial in swelling, knee pain, arthritis of knee or shoulders, it relieves back spasm, stiff back and back ache. It is also good for facial paralysis also.
20. Udvartana (Weight loss Massage)
This is a specialized herbal treatment for weight reduction. A herbal paste mixed with medicated oils is applied all over the body and deeply massaged in a very specific pattern and movement by two therapists for 45 minutes.
Toning the skin & muscle after child birth or weight loss, Removes Cellulite, Obesity, bad smell. it helps to achieve Weight reduction; it imparts good complexion to the skin and Revitalizes the sense of touch. It Removes Kapha and meda toxins from the body.
21. उद्घर्षणं- Rubbing with dry powders
Uddharshanam with medicated powders (choornam) or rubbing with soap, brick powder etc cures itching, allergic catches and vata. Uddarshanam stimulates tactile heat and improves circulation by opening up the blood vessels.
Rooksha Udvartana is highly beneficial in Sthula (obese), stoola premehi, particular skin diseases, neurological diseases, excessive sweating and most of the kapha diseases.
22. उत्सादन- Rubbing with oily paste
Oily anointment, particularly in women, promotes lustre of the body along with cheerfulness, fortune, cleanliness, lightness etc
In Snigdha Udvartana, medicated oil is mixed with fine herbal powders and the body is massaged in pratiloma direction. It is highly beneficial in some skin diseases like vicharchika, Kandu, etc.
Sneha Kalka (paste of herbs moistened with oil), is used in this procedure. It is described under Shashthi Upkrama by सुश्रुत and in द्वि व्रणीयं अध्यायं by चरक as a measure to treat a व्रणा (wound).
