Smalto is the name of SPT Publicom's family of Anti
Line Tapping devices. These security tools are dedicated
to protecting payphone lines for all applications. They
are deployed by placing them in the switch exchange. Then,
during any payphone conversation, the Smalto system regularly
exchanges data to check that the line is not tapped. If
the system determines that there is fraudulent activity,
the line will be cut.
The Smalto family includes two products:
Smalto Box, which is line powered and
single-line, i.e. one Smalto Box protects one payphone
line
Smalto Rack, standard 19" chassis device
equipped with several line boards, powered by the 48V-switch
exchange power.
Smalto Box and Rack are compatible with all current SPT
Publicom payphones, and no hardware modification is necessary
to add Smalto to the system. The Smalto security tools
provide a very high level of security, thanks to a secured
protocol that cannot be replayed.
There are several anti line tapping solutions available
on the market, but Smalto has proved to be the best in
terms of protection:
Frauds related to fake dialing are
impossible with Smalto, as it takes into account ALL numbers
dialed.
Indeed, this kind of fraud consists
in connecting an ordinary telephone set or a simple DTMF
dialer in parallel or in serial with the payphone line.
The intruder terminal dials the first digits for a long-distance
call, so the payphone will charge for a local call while
the exchange has provided an international line, for instance.
