Antel, Uruguay's national communications
operator, is widely re-known for its 100% digitalized
network on which Antel provides a full range of services,
including conventional telephone service, mobile phone
service, local, long distance and international services,
data services, public payphone service and Internet
services.
A wind of change...
ANTEL needed to replace the country's coin and magnetic
stripe-based payphone network with an innovative system
to eliminate fraud and vandalism. So, they conducted
an extensive search for a supplier that could deliver
a country-wide Payphone System Solution within a challenging
timeframe.
Following a worldwide tender, Antel selected SPT Publicom
(ex-Schlumberger Public Telecom) to provide the new
smart card-based Payphone System in 1997. Thanks to
years of experience with communications operators, SPT
Publicom was able to provide an integral solution that
goes beyond providing the required products and equipment.
The end-to-end solution spans the robust PF08C and Access
outdoor payphones models, smart cards, Payphones Management
System, installation, training and even operational
maintenance and cleaning services.
A global vision for a global solution
SPT Publicom (ex-Schlumberger Public Telecom) combined
its international and local payphone technical and business
expertise to create a global project team. Robust, available
and simple to use, the completely outsourced Payphone
System created for Antel comprises more than 10000 smart
card payphones.
By outsourcing both its Payphones provider and its Payphone
System Operations to SPT Publicom, Antel has managed
to obtain very important benefits:
• Payphone reliability and ease of
on-site operations have cut maintenance costs by half.
• Demand for smart card payphones is
twice larger than expected.
• Vandalism has been virtually eliminated.
• The need to contain costs has been
fulfilled while a costly liability operation has been
